Two Vagabonds in the Languedoc

by Jan and Cora Gordon

Two Vagabonds in Languedoc is a must-read for all who live in or visit France. When this book was first published the Times Literary Supplement described it as "One of the most remarkable books on France we have read in a long while...".

Jan & Cora Gordon's charming and evocative sketch of the French village of Najac (thinly disguised by the authors in this book as Janac) is as relevant today as the day it was originally published in 1925. Return to that very same village on the border of the Departments of Tarn and Aveyron and you will find the same enchanting places and friendly families the Gordons discovered all those many years ago. Life really goes on much the same. In their day the authors were something of a publishing phenomenon. "Two Vagabonds" captures all the charm of France and, perhaps, helps explain why it's still one of the most enduring tourist destinations in the world. This facsimile edition is classic travel writing at its very best and most entertaining, incorporating delightful line drawings by the authors.

AUTHORS
Jan and Cora Gordon were an exceptionally talented couple who wrote twelve captivating books about their travels between 1916 and 1933. Working as artists in Paris, they met and married there in 1909; on the outbreak of WW1 they joined the Red Cross and found themselves in the Balkans.
After the war they returned to Paris and combined their literary and artistic skills to write and illustrate their first travel book about Spain. Success followed success and during the twenties they wrote books about their wanderings on foot in the Balkans, France, Portugal, and Sweden. In the late 1920s their growing international reputation led to a grand tour in the USA and further popular books on art, as well as several novels.

The Two Vagabonds in Languedoc is the first in a series of exciting and interesting 20th century travel writing to be published by Bene Factum Publishing.

"Reprinted as a facsimile, the original typesetting, text ornaments and illustrations lend a rustic authenticity to this charming period piece....The drawings, woodcuts and paintings are as fresh today as they must have been in the 1920s. We can only hope that the publisher has plans to resurrect more out-of-print books by the pair."
